What is Baklava?

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry with its birthplace in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. Greece, Iran, Turkey, and Lebanon are just a few of the countries that include baklava in their rich culinary heritages. Its exact place of origin is debated, but some say its beginnings go all the way back to the ancient Assyrians, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia.

It is a pastry made of layers of phyllo/fillo dough brushed with butter, filled with chopped nuts, spices, then sweetened with honey or syrup. Each culture has its own distinct way of preparing this decadent dessert. The baklava featured at Sheer Ambrosia has its foundation in Greek cooking.
